At Findlay Surgical Associates, a full spectrum of endoscopy is available.
Endoscopy is a prodedure where a long flexible tube with a light at one end and a video camera at the other is used to look into your intestinal tract. Many conditions such as ulcers, reflux, tumors, polyps and diverticuli can be diagnosed. Usually done as an outpatient under sedaton, it is named based on the portion of your intestine being examined.
EGD (esophagogastroduodenoscopy) looks at the esophagus, stomach and first portion of the small intestine. Colonoscopy evaluates the colon, or large intestine. Screening colonoscopy is currently recommended for everyone over the age of 50 to look for polyps, tumors or other abnormalities. Polyps are typically small precancerous growths that can usually be removed during the procedure, preventing some from later transforming into a colon cancer. Colonoscopy will require a prep the day prior to the procedure to help cleanse the bowel of stool. Your physician will review the prep that is right for you.
