Surgical Treatment of the  Colon

Intensive Surgical for Infected Colon

Your colon is important for water re-absorption and waste management.  There are a number of surgical problems that arise in the colon such as diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disease, polyps and cancer.

Diverticuli are small out-pouches that form on the colon wall.  Infection of these pouches is called diverticulitis, usually causing pain and fever, and on occasion progressing to severe infection and perforation.  At times, a severe infection, or recurrent infections may require surgery to remove a portion of the colon. Often, a planned surgery can be accomplished robotically through small incisions, although emergency surgery may still require a standard incision.

Polyps are growths of the lining of the colon wall.  The majority of polyps are not cancerous, and most can be removed during colonoscopy.  Some polyps do eventually form cancers.  Large polyps that require surgery, and colon cancers can usually be removed along with a portion of colon with robotic technique, leading to faster recovery and less discomfort.

Timely Treatment for Colon Cancer

Colon cancer frequently begins as a  polyp, a growth of the lining of the colon wall. Removing polyps can prevent the majority of colon cancers from ever forming.  Findlay Surgical Associates can screen for and treat colon polyps and colon cancers with advanced techniques.  Call 419-422-3812 for your consultation.
