A hernia is a defect in the abdominal wall through which internal contents protrude. Usually a hernia causes a bulge underneath the skin, and may cause pain. Activities such as lifting, coughing, or sneezing will frequently worsen symptoms. Hernias occur in many locations such as the groin (inguinal), belly button (umbilical), and old surgical sites (incisional).
A hernia will never resolve itself and can only be repaired with surgery. Without surgery, hernias often enlarge and become more symptomatic. Internal organs may become trapped in the hernia (incarcerated) and can lose their blood supply (strangulated). Hernia surgery is safe and effective and usually can be performed as an outpatient procedure. The surgery can be done through a traditional incision or laparoscopically, typically using a piece of mesh for reinforcement. Your surgeon can discuss the best option for you.
