The rectum is the last section of the colon and functions as a stool reservoir. Although polyps and cancers can form there as in the rest of the colon, the rectum also has its own special problems such as hemorrhoids, abscesses and fissures.
Hemorrhoids are varicose veins of the rectum and may form either internally or externally. Symptoms include bleeding, pain, and itching. They can be treated with warm soaks, high fiber diet, topical agents such as creams and medicated pads, or with surgery. A variety of surgical techniques are used to treat hemorrhoids depending upon the specifics of the situation, and will be discussed with you at the time of your office visit and evaluation.
Fissures are tears of the anal opening, often causing pain and bleeding. Abscesses can also ocur at the anal opening and may require surgical and/or non-sugical treatments. An examination is required to evaluate your condition and plan the most appropriate treatment.
