High-Technology Surgical Procedures

Robotic surgery is a high-technology variation of laparoscopic surgery where the instruments, after being placed and connected to the "robot," are able to be controlled by the surgeon from a console located in the same operating room.  This allows three-dimensional, magnified viewing, and gives additional "wristed" control of the instruments.  These extra capabilites allow for more complex dissection and suturing to be performed in a much easier fashion.

The robotic technique is used in various types of hernia repairs, including groin and hiatal hernias, colon resections, removal of the spleen and selected other procedures.  Benefits over traditional "open" or regular incison procedures may include less pain, shorter hospital stays and quicker recovery.

Possible Benefits of Robotic Surgery

  • Less pain
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Quicker recovery
  • Improved capabilities for surgeon
